It also creates an incompatibility between kernel versions and needs
the firmware distributed separately. Have you made patches to the
relevant packages and waited for them to be included into actual releases?
Are you handling the mails that report a device no longer working?
How much memory does the patch save?
Making Debian happy is not very high on the list of goals.
