Building a modified xen kernel

Sorry, this really should be a debian-user question, but has worked out so hard it looks like I must
ask the Experts and document it.
I'm testing out an out-of-tree patch (lustre filesystem) and am trying to build a patched xen kernel:
I want to try my patch (linux-patch-lustre . deb) on a Debian amd64-xen kernel, but can't figure out
how to do it. I can do it on a plainer kernel , but not a Xen variant. Hows it supposed to be done?
