Package: kernel-image-2.6.10-i386 Severity: wishlist Hi, PREEMPT might be a nice feature for desktop users who reboot their box 3 times a day, but it should be disabled for stability reasons, especially on the SMP flavours. This concerns both 2.6.8-i386 and 2.6.10-i386 kernel images. We should seek a consensus among the kernel team members whether or not PREEMPT should be enabled, if supported by the corresponding architecture. For some concerns, see http://kerneltrap.org/node/2702 Kind regards Frederik Schueler -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.10-1-k7-smp Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)Attachment: pgpViic63wV5E.pgp

Sorry. Preempt is a lot more stable than when this bug was filed, thankfully. It will certainly be staying on, because it seems to be needed currently for some realtime applications, and we don't want to ship separate kernels just for them. Closing this bug now. Please do feel free to report any specific PREEMPT-related bugs or slowdowns, of course! If there is a documented problem in the current kernel, we want to know. -- Nathanael Nerode <neroden@fastmail.fm> Read it and weep. http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Text_of_Gore_speech_0116.html
