I have no new news to share. I had some initial feedback, the most
profound of which was [roughly] "it is strange and unusual and probably
bad for the driver to impose timeouts -- this is supposed to be handled
by the SCSI layer above it."
In the meantime, I continue to download Debian kernel source releases,
apply my patch, and build my own kernels. This has been very reliable.
Unfortunately it's still more work than just grabbing the latest
pre-compiled image from Debian.

I read about your bug report, and I'd like to know if
there is any development. By googling I've found
that you received only one answer on linux-scsi m/l,
so... any sign that your patch will be accepted upstream?
I have a similar problem: I'm going to use a new HP
autoloader 1/8 Ultrium 448, plugged on a HP DL380.
The HP server is running Linux/Debian (kernel 2.6.15),
and it uses a SCSI HBA based on QLA10160.
I noticed that load/unload operations fail with a timeout
error (I didn't measure, but probably they take more than 30s),
while rest of the operations look ok.
Even a f/w update failed because of a timeout during transfer
(luckily the loader has survived the failed attempt).
