Not sure, there is a serious problem here, and namely he is doing an etch beta
install, but initramfs-tools somehow thinks there is a 2.6.8 sarge kernel
after the reboot.

It may be a initramfs-tools problem, but i may also well be a bug in the
kernel-installer part of base-installer.

The i8042.ko module is definitively part of both the 2.6.8 and the 2.6.16
powerpc kernels, and as thus the error is that initramfs-tools tries to use a
non-working or non-existing kernel.

Mmm, maybe this is related to sarge 2.6.8 kernel gaining a abi part ?

Rick, can you send us a list of the dpkg -l of this system, and check exactly
what did happen during the kernel installation. If you can provide us all the
logs of the installation, or can do another one, it would be welcome.

Friendly,

Sven Luther
