What is the version of libasound2 in your system?

I've had a similar problem when libasound2 was upgraded to version 1.0.11-6 and was resolved the next day when was released. During the boot and shutdown phase i could see a lot of error regarding alsa (which i cannot remember), terminating with a red "failed" message.
Such messages were not logged anywhere.

If this is your problem, doing and upgrade will solve.
