Ok, can you give the output of dpkg -l | grep linux-image ? I wonder what
version of the kernel you have installed right now. I guess it is related to
that, and will give the answer to our problem, which is not an mkvmlinuz
problem, but see below.

This is a pre-installation script which is failing, and which comes from
kernel-package and the kernel package itself, it has nothing to do with
mkvmlinuz, which is run afterward. I am thus reassigning this package to both
of linux-2.6 and kernel-package for further processing.

Since the pre-inst fails, the package doesn't get installed, and you have your
older package around, which is why dpkg-reconfigure doesn't find it.

Manoj, bastian, i think this is in your camp, can you have a look at this
problem ?
