Bug#368517: kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp: Fails to bring up network card

All of a sudden the 686-smp kernel refuses to bring up the nic:

Make sure to set CONFIG_PACKET=y and CONFIG_FILTER=y in your kernel
configuration!
exiting.

The same machine has no network troubles with either 386- or 
686-kernels.
The machine actually was in production for a few days with 686-smp, then
it just suddenly stopped.
