please post the errorr message when you get dropped into busybox.
are you using grub or lilo?

what are the following cmds giving in busybox:
uname -a
cat /proc/cmdline
cat /proc/modules

is the relevant kernel module loaded? do you see the device /dev/hda

if you are using the wrong combination of udev and initramfs-tools
and the olde 2.6.15 kernel you may need to just
modprobe ide-disk
and then quit the busybox with ctrl+d
