What about fixing ACPI instead?

This hardly makes them more interesting, and even 7% is a too little
number of users to justify the work needed to keep supporting 2.4
kernels, not only strictly kernel-related but also for all the other
packages which would like to depend on features only available in 2.6
kernels (starting from d-i).
