Thanks, now I think I see what's happening :-)

It's a little cumbersome having to special-case powerpc64 though.
Is my understanding correct that the need for specifying ARCH= will
go away in 2.6.15 with the ppc/ppc64 unification? If so, I will
probably pause building for the powerpc64 flavour until then.
