I think this has fixed bug #290039: that the 3c59x driver on a Thinkpad
T20 was reporting a spurious MAC address with the release 6 version of the
2.4.27-1 kernel package.
I'm afraid the tests I can perform are limited as the machine does not
have enough space on the root partition to fully install more than one
kernel at a time.
However, I could download the -686 version of the kernel-image deb, unpack
it on another partition and with the help of a few symlinks, initrd and
grub - it was possible to boot the machine with the updated kernel.
Under the updated kernel, the 3c59x driver was behaving and reporting the
correct MAC address.
