There's a patch at

that claims to fix the USB problems that cropped up in 2.6.8.
I found it because I got a new USB Gamepad (the Logitech Dual Action
Gamepad), plugged it in, and saw that both usbview and 'cat
/proc/bus/usb/devices' were hanging.
