Bug#345237: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686: e1000 driver stops working after ACPI suspend/resume cycle on IBM Thinkpad T40

Subject: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686: e1000 driver stops working after ACPI suspend/resume cycle on IBM Thinkpad T40
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
Version: 2.6.8-16sarge1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***
After resuming operation from an ACPI S3 suspend, system is unable to receive
or send ethernet frames via the e1000 hardware. To trigger the problem,
significant network traffic is required. Once triggered, all network function
through the e1000 device stops and the laptop requires a reboot. This is
consistently reproducible.

S3 state is entered by "echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep"

Kernel messages before suspend:
e1000: Ignoring new-style parameters in presence of obsolete ones

e1000: eth0: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

After suspend, create lots of traffic:
ssh host 'cat /dev/zero' > /dev/null

Kernel messages when the problem starts:

Unplugging and reconnecting the cable has no effect.
modprobe -r e1000; modprobe e1000 has no effect.
Link is seen up by mii-tool:
