Such backup is relevant only for bootloaders supporting it.

Currently the interaction between bootloaders, ramdisk tools and
kernels is limited to the kernel package postinst routines injected by
kernel-package at kernel build time.

One approach to extend the current kernel packaging logic is for
bootloaders to add scripts below /etc/kernel/postinst.d/

Another approach is to separate such interaction into a separate kernel
install helper package as part of
