Looks like that the 2.6.14 kernels don't expect to be installed under
2.4.27, because I when I try to install the newest kernel I get error:

 Failed to find suitable ramdisk generation tool for kernel version
 2.6.14-1-686-smp on running kernel 2.4.27-2-686-smp in
 /usr/sbin/mkinitrd /usr/sbin/mkinitrd.yaird /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs

yaird does not support installing from a 2.4 kernel, you can though either
install initramfs-tools or do a step upgrade to 2.6.12 in testing or 2.6.8 in
sarge and then to 2.6.14.
