I didn't find anything to directly set the floppy drive I/O port in the
BIOS configuration.
For the record, the machine features an Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG.
The line at the bottom of the screen during the POST is 08/28/96
i430VX-W877-2A59GF2AC-00.

On the other hand, I found some floppy-related configuration parameters:

 * Standard CMOS Setup -> Drive A type:        { 1.44M    | 2.88M   }
 * Standard CMOS Setup -> Floppy 3 Mode:       { Disabled | Drive A }
 * BIOS Features Setup -> Boot up Floppy Seek: { Disabled | Enabled }
 * Power Managemente Setup -> IRQ6 (Floppy):   { OFF      | ON      }
 * PNP/PCI Configuration -> Resources:         { Manual   | Auto    }
 * Int. Peripherals -> Onboard FDD controller: { Disabled | Enabled }

I tried the 2^3=8 possibilities with the last three of them (keeping the
first three on the left values).
Then I tried the 2^3=8 possibilities with the first three (keeping the
last three on the right values).
No luck: I got the same error with every configuration I tried.
I didn't have the time to try out *all* the 2^6=64 possibilities...

I could reproduce the problem even with DeadCD (a live distro based on
Debian which comes with kernel 2.6.8, just like sarge:
http://web.isteve.bofh.cz/deadcd/).

It seems that every 2.4.x kernel I try works with no floppy issues,
while every 2.6.x kernel fails to insert floppy.ko showing the error.
I could not find a working 2.6.x kernel to compare with the sarge one...
