Well, this is something that needs more documentation. Basically, you need the
linux-headers-<version>, and then set KSRC=/lib/modules/<version>/build, which
is the default for many external modules, and stuff will builf dor itself
without problems. What exactly did you expect by 'hooks' ?

This is something which needs to be sorted out in a new external module policy
which i had hoped to get written for 2.6.14, but as 2.6.4 got released today
...
