Bug#322705: kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp: tg3 driver stop to send and receive traffic, until the next "ifdow; ifup"

Package: kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp
Version: 2.4.27-10
Severity: important

During the utilization of openafs, the ethernet of the machine
stopped. Doing a ifdown and ifup could recover the NIC, but during
the ifdown usually I could see messages like the nest one:

tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=2000 enable_bit=2

This problem is reported by other people with older kernels. I believe
this error is independent of the bug 322606 that happen on other
machine with different hardware and NIC. I will make tests to confirm
if sending only traffic the NIC stops.

This machine could have a problem with SATA controller disks because
when idle the typical line of "vmstat 1" is:

procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- ----cpu----
r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa
