We should create a new flavour, as PAE does indeed effect the
performance (a noteworthy slowdown at least with mysql). something like
686-smp-pae should be sufficient, as only intel server chipsets do
support more than 4GB RAM (or: most memory controllers on cheapo
consumer boards do not), and k7 boards do neither.

For the board in question (tyan S5350) this will for sure fix the issue,
because both bios and board do support more than 4GB ram. But I doubt
enabling PAE will fix the very same problem on most other boards wich
do support up to 4GB ram in 4 slots, but not more.
Additionally, some drivers will break on this flavour, the megaraid
driver for example wich does not work on amd64 boxes with remapped PCI
I/O.

Best regards
