Basically this means that the process is exceuting some code
in the kernel, and that code is stuck, perhaps in a loop,
perhaps waiting for a lock, but regardless stuck.
You can't kill a process until it is back in user-space,
and if this doesn't happen, you have to reboot :(

Is it possible to get the dmsg output when this occurs?
That might help track down the problem, but to be honest,
its likely quite hard to narrow this down to a simple fix
that is appropriate for inclusion in 2.6.8, which is
now in maintenane mode for sarge. Your best option
is probably to try linux-image-2.6.12-1-686 from unstable.

Thanks
