does newer knoppix with kernel 2.6.11 boot on your laptop?
you can choose your kernel in the expert install modus of
debian-installer.
you might be interested in the etch installer as he should
use a new kernel pretty soon, guess it depends on when 2.6.12 reaches
testing, which may take 1-2 weeks as a new revision is planed.
