Sorry for meddling... I have set the BTS back as it was as further thought
shows that although these issues are possibly related they are not the
same bug!
Sorry.

I noticed that the latest version of e2fsprogs in sid (1.37-2) no longer
unmounts /mnt so should be safer (if not completely safe!). Setting
"PKGSCRIPTS=no" in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf stops e2fsprogs putting a
script in the initrd is a workarround until the "fixed" version hits
sarge.

I'm still concerned with mkinitrd's /sbin/init running "mount_root" when
$rootdev = 255. I guess I should raise a bug against initrd-tools.
