Bug#301701: kernel-image-2.6.10-1-k7: System catatonic when tryingtowrite DVD or CD as user
It appears the ide-scsi module is broken in kernels since 2.6.9.
Recent versions of cdrecord and growisofs can talk to atapi devices
directly without first going through the ide-scsi abstraction layer when
using 2.6. But they appear only to do this if the ide-scsi abstraction
layer module is not linked to the drive.
I have found this problem can be cured by removing entries such as
hdc=ide-scsi from the boot stanza of your 2.6.10+ kernel.
Edit /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/conf/grub.conf. remove
{hda,hdb,hdc,hdd}=ide-scsi from your kernel's boot parameters. If
editing lilo.conf, don't forget to re-run lilo to make the changes take
effect.
Reboot your system. If using k3b, you may need to re-run k3bsetup as root.
Perhaps the 2.6.10+ debian kernel install scripts should look for the
existance of hdx=ide-scsi in the append= section of the boot loader then
warn the user.
This may break compatibility with older versions of cdrecord (such as
that supplied with woody). Given that sarge will be using 2.6.8, this
problem will, to the most part, be avoided.

This bug could, for example, be a problem with ide-scsi. ide-scsi may,
for example, write incoming data blocks over random memory locations
instead of to a correct memory location for passing to the CD writer.
