Bug#298472: [powerpc] Screen is flickering

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-powerpc
Version: 2.6.8-11
Hardware: Apple Powerbook 1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 128 MB (lspci says: 0000:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Rad eon 9600 M10])

It seems to be impossible to configure X so that it isn't flickering at all. Either you use 'append="video=ofonly"' in /etc/yaboot.conf in order to avoid a slight horizontal flickering already visible in text mode, then there's only a wild flickering when you start X, so that you can't use X at all. Or you use 'append="video=radeonfb"' in order to make X usable, but then this horizontal flickering remains also in the graphical mode: There are kind of ghost images about 3 cm left to the actual objects on the screen. With "ghost images" I mean: The objects are drawn partially in some horizontal lines.

In kernels 2.6.9-1 and 2.6.10-3 this problem doesn't occur if you use 'append="video=radeonfb"' in /etc/yaboot.

Besides, the Debian installer should write the correct video mode into yaboot, recognize the graphic chip and the screen resolution. I don't know if it does now, but in November 2004 the sarge installer didn't.
