Apologies for the delay on this, we were waiting for information from our hardware vendor. I have updated the BIOS on our system to the latest revision [1] and can now happily boot kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-k8-smp with no Machine Check Exceptions. However, I still get the hang on time synching, I will raise a seperate bug against util-linux on that. Thank you all very much for all your help!
