Bug#296408: Performance bug in Linux kernels >=2.6.8

Package: kernel
Version: 2.6.8
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hello,

Yee-Ting Li had published a bug report about the BIC protocol which is the congestion control algorithm used in 2.6.8 kernels by default. The bug report can be found at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-net&m=110900271413344&w=2

A different fix offered by Stephen Hemminger is at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-netdev&m=110902672620626&w=2

The ChangeSet committed is by Stephen Hemminger can be found at http://linus.bkbits.net:8080/linux-2.5/cset@1.2081?nav=index.html|ChangeSet@-1d

I think this fix is important since the performance of the BicTCP algorithm is far below what can be achieved, as well as being unfriendly to other TCP streams.

In addition to that fix I'd recommend considering disabling BIC by default since it is still an experimental algorithm.

Baruch
