kernel 2.4 -> kernel 2.6 problems with Maxtor SATA

Hello,

I'm new to linux and i've completed my debian netinstall. Now when I 
want to compile a new kernel I get an error:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

I know that if I switch from kernel 2.4 to 2.6.10 I have to use the scsi 
drivers for my SATA disc.
So I've changed the hde3 to sda3 in my grub loader.

Still I have the same problem here.
