APM does not see or react upon closing the lid of my IBM thinkpad X22

Version 2.4.27-2, and earlier kernels are fine.  With v2,
 closing the lid shows

    Dec 13 21:46:25 oliebij apmd[1064]: Suspending now

in the log.  Nothing appears with 2.4.27-6.
