Bug#275356: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1-686-smp: Can't detect IDE CD rom or IDE ZIP disk on Dell Precision 650
I also have a Dell Precision 650 on which the IDE CD-R/W and DVD drives
are not being detected using kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686-smp (currently
installed version 2.6.8-4). I've found that the drives ARE detected
when using kernel-image-2.4.27-1-686-smp (installed version 2.4.27-2),
after performing a "modprobe ide-detect" (and of course ide-detect is
not included in the 2.6.8 kernel). Doing so on 2.4.27 will also install
the ide-cd module. Installing the ide-cd module alone in 2.6.8 does not
detect the IDE devices.
I've included the 2.4.27 dmesg, the results of lspci -v, and the results
of lsmod.
Hope this helps,
Kevin.
