For my better understanding: you installed i386 sarge with the 64bit
amd64 kernel, correct?

Can you send in a dmesg showing the problem? Is this reproduceable with
2.6.8-1-686-smp?

2.6.9 is under way, maybe you can try the pure64 D-I with 2.6.9 as soon
as it is ready, if you have the time left.
