Bug#275302: aic7xxx not finding cards

then

mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-1-686-smp 2.6.8-1-686-smp

worked for me as a quick hack/workaround.

Note that you will need to re-run lilo if you are using it. I'm using grub.
