Bug#276988: kernel-image-2.6-amd64-generic: not intuitive package description

Package: kernel-image-2.6-amd64-generic
Version: 2.6.8-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

I've Athlon64 CPU and want to install kernel image for this cpu, but
currently in debian there are several packages of kernel images for amd64:

Package kernel-image-2.6-amd64-generic
    * unstable (base): Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on generic x86_64 systems

Package kernel-image-2.6-amd64-k8
    * unstable (base): Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on AMD64 systems

Package kernel-image-2.6-amd64-k8-smp
    * unstable (base): Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on AMD64 SMP systems

Package kernel-image-2.6-amd64-xeon
*unstable (base): Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on Intel nocona systems.

It's pretty hard to choose, which one I need, because of bad descriptions :(

Luckily I've found more user-friendly descriptions about for these packages
on debian AMD64 HOW-TO:

The Debian Kernel Team maintains a 64bit kernel package for both i386 and amd64, featuring different kernel flavours for AMD64 and EM64T systems as well as UP and SMP flavours.

    * amd64-generic - this is the installer kernel, running on all amd64 compatible architectures known.
    * amd64-k8 - the uniprocessor Athlon64/Opteron flavour. If your CPU vendor is AMD and you have a single processor in your box, this is what you want.
    * amd64-k8-smp - the Multiprocessor Opteron flavour with NUMA support.
    * em64t-p4 - this flavour is intended for single processor P4 systems with HT disabled.
    * em64t-p4-smp - if you have a "Nocona" Xeon or want to run you P4 in HT mode.

Note: The debian kernels are 64bit, need an initrd, and have IA32 emulation enabled by default.

So, it would be nice to add this info (maybe including note about IA32
emulation) into description of debian packages of kernel images for amd64

Thanks,
Mantas
