The extra space is precious and there are more worthwhile drivers than
atkbd.  More framebuffer drivers comes to mind, such as rivafb once
it's fixed, as well as swsusp/pmdisk whenever it enters the kernel.

Early boot problems are a huge pain no matter what.  The extra pain of
fiddling keyboard support into the ramdisk is comparatively small.

Is there any chance of getting this fixed?

Under normal conditions, the initrd is supposed to bring up the root
filesystem and nothing else.  A keyboard is not necessary for this.
