I think that this problem is specific to beta4. Could you try a more
recent image such as tc1?

The module is not available the first time cardmgr is started because
it has to be retrieved from the CD. Beta4 did not restart cardmgr the
second time hardware detection was done.

Yes, there seems to be a bug here. I've heard this from somebody else
too I think. It seems like pcmcia-cs's postinst incorrectly sets PCIC
to yenta_socket in /etc/default/pcmcia when you need i82365. Could you
send me the output of the command "pcic_probe -m -k", both with and
without cardmgr running?

Only cardmgr can load modules for 16-bit cards. You can't load them
manually.
