This, of course, means that ALSA cannot be used, as all volumes are by
default 0, meaning that even if you could make sound, which does not
appear to be the case, then you would not be able to hear it anyway.


Try `modprobe snd-ioctl32' this adds the 32bit IOCTL support.

This should fix your problem.

You are correct! That did solve my problem indeed. Perhaps this should be
reassigned to the ALSA crew, so that they can automatically load the module if
it is required, i.e. if they are running 32 bit binaries against a 32 bit
kernel?
