Please, let me know if there is any additional info to extract when I
manage to reproduce this problem again. I ran ksymoops, but it didn't
generate more meaningful information than what was already in syslog (is
it supposed to decode the stack trace ?)
I think this problem is with critical severity - it makes the system
unusable (tar doesn't work at all) and I don't think it is a hardware
problem since this machine had been running Windows for a long time
without problems before I retired it with the intent to use it as Linux
file server. The chipset is 440BX, which should be pretty stable by now ...
There was a similar bug for 2.4.19 - #172250
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=172250&archive=yes),
which I don't think was resolved.
Excuse me if I am not providing the needed info right away - I am new at
submitting kernel bugs (or at judging their severity).
