Bug#284567: Unable to handle kernel paging request

The problem occured while running tar, causing it to segfault. It was reproducible until a reboot. 
I am copying the info from syslog below. I did a search about this kind of problem and found many complaints about it, but no satisfactory explanation or resolution. 
memtest86 found no memory problems.
