Woody, stable 2.4.18 no compile, multiple problems

Hello,

Stats:
 Debian Woody stable,
 kernel-package version 7.107,
 kernel-source-2.4.18 version 2.4.18-14.3

The source tree at /usr/src is owned by my-uid.src for all files.

When executing:

fakeroot make-kpkg clean
or: fakeroot make-kpkg --append-to-version=.041129 kernel_image

Error occurs (16 times):

dpkg-architecture: failure: dpkg --print-installation-architecture
filed: Permission denied

I also tried "make-kpkg --rootcmd=fakeroot ..."

After giving up on trying to build a kernel not using root I then logged
in as root and tried:

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg --append-to-version=.041129 kernel_image

This time it compiled many files before exiting with the following
error:

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.4.18.04112
9/kernel/drivers/char/drm/sis.o depmod: sis_malloc_Ra3329ed5
depmod: sis_free_Rced25333
make[2]: *** [_modinst_post] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18'
make[1]: *** [real_stamp_image] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18'

I googled for a solution but only found others with the same or similar
error and some vague references to the cause. I need the sis module and
it would be really nice to be able to build without being root. And I
need to build a kernel with raid 1 built in.

Any suggestions?

Best Regards,
David
