Version: all
Severity: normal

Hi

Some time ago I discovered the 32 group limit in Linux.

You can simply trigger it.

Create 34 groups in /etc/group with your user as member.
Log in to the system to make it take effect.

then type
groups

and

groups <your username>

The two is not the same.

There have been some discussion about this on the kernel lists
a loong time ago (1999). I just can not find how to fix it. It
was not as easy as just to increse the limit define.

kernel-source-2.4.18/include/linux/limits.h is involved.
...
#define NGROUPS_MAX       32    /* supplemental group IDs are available */

This is a bit of a problem to me (some users have about 34 groups
and it will increse) because we have very separated permissions for
different users.

I really would like to have a higher limit (or preferrably dynamic)
if you know how to accomplish it.

Best regards,

// Ola

the 32 group limit is gone in 2.4 and 2.6.
just maybe if you use intermezzo in 2.4.
