Well, now it works fine. I unheld 2.6.8-2 and reinstalled:

~# echo "kernel-image-2.6.8-1-386 install" | dpkg --set-selections
~# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-1-386
~# reboot

Worked fine. Yes, it really did install a new kernel:

~# uname -a
Linux chickadee 2.6.8-1-386 #1 Mon Sep 13 23:29:55 EDT 2004 i586 GNU/Linux
~# dpkg -l|grep kernel-image
ii kernel-image-2 2.6.7-2 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.7 on 386.
ii kernel-image-2 2.6.8-3 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.8 on 386.

The only thing I can say is maybe I had some kind of temporary braindamage
yesterday and installed a 686 kernel. Sorry.
