Subject: Problems with some firewalls
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7
Version: 2.6.8-2
Severity: normal

Somewhere after the 18th of august I got problems downloading my mail fro=
m
pophost.ludd.luth.se. One of the administrators said that one possible
reason for this is that Linux can't handle that their firewall won't stri=
p
TCP packages initially. As I understand him this should not be specific t=
o
ludd, but should apply to other sites too for newer 2.6 kernels.

This is exactly what he said (unfortunately in Swedish)
  >Det kan vara en m=F6jlighet. Finns det n=E5got st=E4lle att hitta mera=
 info om
detta
  >> problem?
  >>

Ja, s=E4kert massor. Enligt vad jag l=E4ste =E4r det f=F6r att olika
brandv=E4ggar strippar TCP-options initialt.  V=E5r brandv=E4gg g=F6r int=
e
det, men Linuxen fattar inte det. Det g=E5r att st=E4lla in n=E5nstans
i /proc hur den skall g=F6ra.
---
When asked for more info he admitted he didn't know anything else other t=
han=20
that it should only affect newer 2.6 kernels.

Still, whether he did guess the problem correctly or not changing back to
the 2.6.7-1-k7 kernel fixed the problem. The problem should be able to re=
produce
by trying to access www.ludd.luth.se, which works with 2.6.7-1-k7. The
connection hangs under 2.6.8-1-k7.

My kernels are somewhat unorthodox in that they need the nolapic option p=
assed to
them to start on the laptop in question, but hopefully it won't affect th=
is bug.

I don't experience the same problems as #268167.
