What kernel command line did you use? Try passing a root option
there, set to wherever you keep your root file system. This should do
the trick.

Unfortunately the machine in question is now my home router, so difficult to run further tests on.

I have another slightly-smaller but otherwise identical machine I was planning on continuing tests on. Unfortunately I have wasted all night, ultimately decoding the tftp protocol by hand, to discover that this new machine apparently will not accept a 6MB kernel + initrd via netboot.

I will try to test the original machine soon with "root=/dev/hda3".
