I've just filed a bug report against 2.6 for this same system; 2.6 does
not work on this system, so I have no workaround.

Two questions.

1. Did you turn DMA on?

My original report shows I could not. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=270199

2. Are you using the apprioriate driver for your IDE chipset?
If you use the generic IDE driver generally things are very slow.
   Ditto for DMA being off.

If you read the full transcript you will see that I use the PIIX4 driver which, I believe, is correct for this chipset.

I've got a working 2.6 kernel now. I originally installed the 2.4 kernel as a workaround for 2.6 not working.

I think it should have come up working; it was working (booted from SCSII) in a different box - LX chipset, same drivers, but the old system was giving problems and the drives needed to be moved.
