kernel-source-2.6.8: Unable to suspend using APM with APM and ACPI compiled in

Subject: kernel-source-2.6.8: Unable to suspend using APM with APM and ACPI compiled in
Package: kernel-source-2.6.8
Version: 2.6.8-5
Severity: normal

Dear Debian Kernel developers,

This is a bug report, but I am not filling a bug at the Debian BTS at
the moment, since it is very specific, and maybe it is not reproducible
at all with other hardware. If you think that it should be better to
fill the bug in the Debian BTS, I will do so.

Short description:

I use a custom compiled kernel from Debian sources on a laptop with APM
and ACPI compiled in.

I use "acpi=off" as a kernel parameter.

With kernel versions up to

kernel-source-2.6.8-2

I was able to suspend the machine (using APM) without problems. Since
kernel version

kernel-source-2.6.8-4

I can't do it anymore.

a.- Using key press (in my laptop Fn-POWER): the system ignores it, it
    does not generate APM events
b.- Using "apm -s": the screen goes blank, no further activity is seen,
(no suspend, no wake), I have to power down the machine.

Expected behaviour:
a.- Pressing Fn+POWER should suspend to disk
b.- Using "apm -s" should suspend to memory, and wake on the following
    POWER button key press

Investigating the problem, I found that I can successfully suspend the
machine by building kernels by either:

1.- Removing ACPI from the kernel config
2.- Removing the patch (patch -R) acpi-early.dpatch

by comparing the syslog of a "right" working kernel, and a "wrong"
working kernel, I find the following suspicious line:

$ diff -Nru syslog-right-clean syslog-wrong-clean
[...]
@@ -41,6 +41,7 @@
localhost kernel: Enabling fast FPU save and restore... done.
localhost kernel: Enabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception support... done.
localhost kernel: Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK.
+ localhost kernel: ACPI: IRQ9 SCI: Level Trigger.
localhost kernel: NET: Registered protocol family 16
localhost kernel: PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfd9c4, last bus=1
localhost kernel: PCI: Using configuration type 1
[...]

In case you find this worth investigating (and/or fixing), in the
attachment I am sending to you:

1.- My .config file
2.- Some syslogs (with the date and time removed, to allow for easily
    running "diff" on them):
    a.- syslog-right-clean : a working kernel compiled with
	kernel-source-2.6.8-2
    b.- syslog-right-clean : a non-working kernel compiled with
	kernel-source-2.6.8-5, same .config as a)
    c.- syslog-noacpi-clean : a working kernel, compiled with
kernel-source-2.6.8-5, with ACPI removed from the .config file
    d.- syslog-unpatch-clean : a working kernel, based on
	kernel-source-2.6.8-5, with the acpi-early.dpatch patch
reversed, same config as in a)
3.- buildinfo for kernel a) (the others are similar)

This is not very important, since I have a couple of workarounds, but I
thought that I would report this small regression anyway.

Best regards, and thank you for your work,

Jaume
