If modprobe issues warnings, mkinitrd thinks it has failed:

/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: add_modules_dep_2_5: modprobe failed
WARNING: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa: No such file or directory
WARNING: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa: No such file or directory
WARNING: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa: No such file or directory
Failed to create initrd image.

The modprobe.err file says:
