Maybe this is too obvious, but did you verify that packages
"nfs-common" and "nfs-kernel-server" are installed on your
machine? Are they activated for your run level?

The NFS kernel modules should be loaded automagically. But
if they aren't, then you can still try to add "nfs" and
"nfsd" to /etc/modules to get them for the next reboot.
