kernel-patch-debian-2.6.8 and pristine linux 2.6.8 kernel

The description of kernel-patch-debian-2.6.8 claims that they should
be applied to a pristine linux 2.6.8 kernel. Yet I get:

No version.Debian file, assuming pristine Linux 2.6.8
Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Assume -R? [n]
    Apply anyway? [n]
2 out of 2 hunks ignored -- saving rejects to file fs/nfs/file.c.rej

What am I missing?
