Also, can you try with a newwer 2.6.x kernel.

Sorry for the delays I've been away for a couple of weeks.
While doing some further experiments I have discovered that what was causing the problem was an append on my lilo config. I had a idebus=66 and ide0=66 and ide1=66 for some reason this was causing the two ide channels to be seen as ide2 and ide3. When I removed this append line the image boots fine.

This was with both a 2.6.4 kernel and a 2.6.7 kernel.
