Customized how? Can you put the extra patches, as well as the .config
that you're using, online somewhere? It's difficult to know whether the
problem you're seeing is caused by the new module-init-tools, a module in
/usr/src/modules somewhere, a bug in the kernel build system, or a bug in
the customizations you've added w/out more info.

Looks like you've got a symlink pointing to a parent, and something's
following it. However, it would be nice to have a few more lines from
the build-log, from before this error.

I assume /usr/src/linux is your unpacked kernel sources, from
kernel-source-2.6.7-2? What modules do you have in /usr/src/modules?
What version of module-init-tools are you using? If you're running
3.1-pre4-1, try downgrading to 3.1-pre2-2 and seeing if the build works.
